Winchester 2nd XV (11) - Sandown & Shanklin 2nd XV (8)
Winchester continue to progress.
Winchester knew that this game would be a hard task with the spoils from last season being shared. However Sandown t
The game was a stop start affair with Winchester taking the early lead from the kickoff, Phil Prangle collecting before driving forward, forwards recycled the ball before the backs shipped it wide to Alex Jack on the wing. Man of the Match Alex made a blistering run to the visitors 22 before being brought down. Winchester again recycled the ball and went through several phases before Sandown conceded a penalty which Fly-Half Tom Locke slotted.
Winchester's continued to press from the restart with returning Richard Knight making several runs before combinations of forward and back play allowed full back Mark Castle to make a break being brought down short of the try line. Winchester forwards recycled allowing Chris Veal to power over for the opening try of the game.
Both sides had opportunities to score but last ditch tackles or penalties stopped the pressure. Sandown showed some good form and pushed deep into the home sides half, where by Winchester won a scrum. Winchester caught unaware at how quickly the ball shot out of the back of the scrum fumbled the ball allowing Sandowns nine to scoop the lose ball up and score in the corner.
Sandown scored an early penalty in the second half to level the score before Winchester took the lead again though a Tom Locke penalty.
Sandown had plenty of penalties to regain the lead but where unable to do so.
I don't think either team will be too happy with their performances with Winchester starting well but not having the killer instinct to increase the lead. Captain Mark Castle, I'm pleased with the win and that the side continues to develop each week but we need to be more clinical with our phase play.
Winchester travel away to local rivals Southampton next Saturday.
